The History of Golfarang Design

The efforts of designers to provide an attractive as well as fascinating carpet design, along with the use of high-quality raw materials, has ultimately led to the production of the most beautiful and magnificent Iranian carpets. Progress and development in the design of Iranian carpets took place gradually.

The use of Golfarang carpet design and its integration into the design of Iranian carpets started almost from the Safavid period and reached its peak during the Qajar dynasty. In fact, this design became more prevalent at the beginning of the reign of Nasser al-Din Shah Qajar, mainly due to the frequent travels of Qajar kings to European countries. A considerable number of art products entered Iran during this period. As the Qajar kings were greatly interested in Western art, some of the patterns and designs of Western art affected the Iranian art and Westernized different arts, including Iranian carpet. Apart from Iranian carpets, the effects of westernization or application of Golfarang patterns are evident in stucco at the entrance, columns, and window frames of Qajar buildings.

Golfarang in Iranian Carpet Design

The designs provided by the integration of Golfarang include the overall flower, Bijar, bouquet, medallion design – corner, and the nightingale and flowers design. Along with other patterns and details, Golfarang design is also used in these carpets and plays a key role as one of the main components of the design and pattern.

Different patterns are used in Iranian carpets, including the Shah Abbasi flower and Arabesque pattern, each of which has its adherents, leading to the diversity of Iranian carpet designs. Along with the above designs, Golfarang has also found its own position and admirers. This design is inspired by natural flowers whose incorporation in the carpet composition fascinates the viewers. This design is so elegant, natural, and artistic as if every single natural flower has been picked and arranged on the carpet.

The design of Golfarang carpets represents natural and real flowers through the unique and exquisite combination of flower colors. In other words, the dominant light colors, particularly red, distinguish the Iranian carpet and make it shine with its attractive and charming Golfarang design.
